ROS 2: Java for Robots

A self-paced Java-to-ROS 2 bridge for learners who already know Java programming and beginner ROS 2. The course focuses on robot-application architecture, WPILib/Java framework evidence, ROS 2 runtime inspection, simulation and integration boundaries, cross-layer failure diagnosis, reliability, readiness, and technical defense. Learners keep Java/JVM, framework, ROS 2 runtime, and physical-robot evidence separate unless they explicitly implement and demonstrate an integration path.

Course overview

This self-paced bridge course is for learners who already know Java programming and beginner ROS 2. It focuses on robot-application architecture, WPILib/Java framework evidence, ROS 2 runtime inspection, simulation/integration boundaries, cross-layer diagnosis, reliability, and readiness defense.

Audience and pace

Grades 9–12. Eighteen evidence-gated Units are organized around substantive bridge concerns; prerequisite-review routes are checkpoints, not a full reteach of Java or ROS 2 foundations.

What you will learn

  • Keep JVM, Java robotics framework, ROS 2 runtime, simulation, and physical-robot evidence distinct.
  • Build and test bounded Java robot components while inspecting ROS 2 system behavior.
  • Diagnose cross-layer faults and defend a readiness claim with honest integration limits.

Course structure

Units cover evidence boundaries; typed sensor evidence; decisions/repetition; component architecture; reliable Java components; ROS runtime review; bringup/integration boundaries; and robot-system review.

Learning evidence and assessment

Learners create component and sensor records, tests, logs, ROS graph/topic/QoS observations, launch/bringup evidence, diagnosis notes, and readiness dossiers. The course never claims a Java-to-ROS execution path without implementation evidence.

Expectations and boundaries

Meet the Java Programming and ROS 2: For Students prerequisites. Use approved simulations and environments; do not connect to physical robots, change shared ROS infrastructure, or represent framework evidence as runtime proof.

Capstone

The Java-to-ROS 2 Robot System Readiness Review models/tests Java components, inspects ROS 2, diagnoses a controlled failure, and defends a bounded readiness decision.

The course reader and supplied evidence support prerequisite review. Local ROS/JDK work follows the exact environment and safety guidance for each approved activity.
