laser printer
A laser printer uses electrostatic imaging, toner, transfer, and heat to create a printed page. Example: An office workgroup printer uses toner cartridges and a fuser assembly. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse laser printing with inkjet printing; the marking process is different.
imaging drum
The imaging drum is a photosensitive surface that forms the electrostatic image used to attract toner. Example: A damaged drum can cause repeated marks at regular intervals on printed pages. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse the drum with the fuser; the drum creates the toner image before fusing.
fuser
The fuser uses heat and pressure to bond toner permanently to paper. Example: Toner that rubs off the page can indicate a fusing problem. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse the fuser with the transfer roller; transfer happens before fusing.
transfer roller
The transfer roller helps move toner from the imaging drum onto the paper. Example: A print defect occurs after the toner image forms but before it is fused. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse transfer with pickup; pickup rollers move paper, not toner.
pickup roller
A pickup roller feeds a sheet of paper from the tray into the printer path. Example: A worn pickup roller can cause failure to feed paper from a full tray. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse pickup rollers with fuser rollers; they operate at different points in the paper path.
duplexer
A duplexer routes paper so a printer can print on both sides automatically. Example: A two-sided document is printed without manually reinserting pages. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse duplexing with collating; duplexing refers to two-sided printing.
print spooler
A print spooler manages print jobs waiting to be sent to a printer. Example: A stuck print queue may be cleared by restarting the spooler service. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse the spooler with the printer driver; the spooler manages queued jobs.
printer driver
A printer driver translates operating-system print requests into commands the printer understands. Example: Installing the correct driver restores missing print features. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse the driver with firmware stored inside the printer.
toner
Toner is fine powdered material used by laser printers to form the printed image. Example: A nearly empty toner cartridge causes faded output. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse toner with liquid ink used by inkjet printers.
calibration
Calibration adjusts a device so output aligns with expected positioning, density, or color. Example: A color printer runs a calibration routine after replacing imaging components. Do not confuse it with: Do not confuse calibration with physical cleaning; calibration adjusts output behavior.
