CS1337: Systems, Networks, and Cyber Defense
A systems-first defensive computing course where students learn how programs, data contracts, services, networks, identities, controls, telemetry, risk, and recovery fit together. Students build baselines, analyze supplied or isolated evidence, safely change bounded conditions, verify controls, retest required function, and defend claims without unauthorized or operational hacking workflows.

Audience and pace
Grades 9–12. The scheduled course runs for 18 weeks at 240 instructional minutes per week.
What you will learn
- Trace how programs, data contracts, services, networks, identities, controls, telemetry, risk, and recovery connect.
- Choose evidence and defensive controls proportionally to a stated system boundary.
- Document and defend a bounded test, correction, recovery, and remaining-risk decision.
Course structure
Units address computing systems and evidence, programming/data contracts, networks/protocol literacy, defensive architecture, telemetry, and a defensive systems review. Work is organized around normal, boundary, failure, and recovery evidence.
Learning evidence and assessment
Learners produce baselines, architecture maps, supplied-evidence analyses, test matrices, risk/control records, and technical defenses. Assessment rewards justified evidence and limitations over unsupported certainty.
Expectations and boundaries
All security work is authorized, supplied, synthetic, or isolated. Do not scan live targets, collect credentials, bypass controls, or perform operational attack workflows. Escalate real security concerns to the instructor.
Capstone
The Defensive Systems Review reconstructs a fictional organization’s architecture, evaluates a bounded test matrix, documents risks and controls, and defends prioritized next actions with limitations.
Access and support
Use the reader, supplied evidence, and approved isolated tools. Alternative formats and structured investigation records are available for all major activities.
