Scouting Turns Observation into Decisions
Scouting is a data system.
Humans observe matches, record events, clean or verify the data, calculate useful measures, and turn those measures into alliance or strategy decisions.
Bad scouting produces confident nonsense faster.
Decide before you collect
Every field in a scouting form should answer a decision question.
Example:
We need to know whether a partner can reliably acquire from the source area.
Useful data might include attempts, successes, cycle time, and failure conditions.
A field called “robot quality: 1-10” is much harder to defend.
Counts, rates, and context
Suppose Robot A scores 8 pieces and Robot B scores 6.
That does not automatically make A better.
Maybe:
- A attempted 15 and B attempted 7;
- B spent half the match playing defense;
- A received perfect feeding;
- B lost time recovering from a field collision;
- one number was entered incorrectly.
Useful scouting combines quantitative data with structured context.
Example calculation
Robot A: 8 successes / 12 attempts
Robot B: 6 successes / 7 attempts
Success rates:
A = 8 / 12 ≈ 0.67
B = 6 / 7 ≈ 0.86
A produced more total scores in that match. B was more efficient.
Which matters depends on the alliance need.
Data-quality checks
Before using scouting data:
- look for impossible values;
- compare multiple observers when available;
- flag missing matches;
- separate notes from measurements;
- define what counts as an attempt;
- record role changes such as defense.
A spreadsheet cannot fix an undefined measurement.
Build a scouting decision table
Use real public match data, team observations, or a supplied hypothetical dataset.
Choose three teams and report:

Then write one alliance or match-strategy decision supported by at least two data points.
Failure mode: precision theater
A dashboard can display three decimal places and still be based on inconsistent human observations.
Do not confuse more digits with more certainty.
The scouting system should tell decision-makers where the data is strong, where it is missing, and where judgment is still required.
