Lesson 3: Enhance an Image With Purpose
The district curriculum does not just ask you to place an image on a page. It asks you to enhance photographs. That means you need to make deliberate edits and explain why they improve the image for its intended use.
Changing a filter is not automatically enhancement.
Start with the job of the image
Before opening Photoshop or another approved image editor, answer three questions:
- Where will the image appear?
- What should the viewer notice first?
- What technical limits matter, such as dimensions, file size, or orientation?
An image for a wide website banner has a different job from an image used as a small project thumbnail.
Four editing operations you should understand
Crop
Cropping removes parts of the image frame.
A good crop can:
- remove distracting empty space;
- change the emphasis;
- fit a required aspect ratio; or
- improve composition.
A bad crop can remove important context or cut through the subject awkwardly.
Resize
Resizing changes the pixel dimensions.
A camera image might be 6000 pixels wide even though the website only displays it at 1200 pixels. Uploading the full-size image wastes bandwidth and storage without improving the visible result.
Do not confuse resizing with cropping. Cropping changes what is inside the frame. Resizing changes how many pixels represent the image.
Exposure and contrast correction
Exposure affects overall brightness. Contrast affects the separation between lighter and darker regions.
The goal is usually to recover useful detail and improve readability, not to push every slider to the maximum.
Color correction
Color tools can correct a color cast or improve balance. They can also make skin tones, objects, or environments look unnatural when overused.
The question is not “Does it look dramatic?” The question is “Does the change support the image's purpose without misrepresenting it?”
File formats matter
Common web image formats include:
- JPEG/JPG for photographs where some compression is acceptable;
- PNG for images that need transparency or crisp flat graphics;
- WebP on platforms that support it for efficient web delivery.
An export choice affects quality and file size.
Lab: Before and after image enhancement
Use a teacher-supplied image, your own approved image, or another image you are authorized to use.
Make a copy before editing. Never destroy the only original.
Complete these steps:
- Record the original pixel dimensions.
- Crop the image for a clear purpose.
- Resize it to an appropriate web dimension supplied by the teacher or site requirement.
- Make one exposure, contrast, or color correction.
- Export a web-ready copy.
- Record the new dimensions and file size.
- Place the original and edited version side by side.
Then write a short edit record:
- Crop: what did you remove and why?
- Resize: what dimensions did you choose and why?
- Correction: what visual problem did you address?
- Export: what format did you choose and why?
Worked example
Suppose a photograph is 4032 × 3024 pixels and shows a robotics team with a large amount of empty wall above them.
The editor wants a wide portfolio banner.
A reasonable process might be:
- crop away much of the empty wall;
- use a wide composition that keeps the team visible;
- resize the image to 1400 pixels wide;
- make a small exposure correction so faces are not too dark; and
- export a compressed JPEG for the website.
The important evidence is not that the final image is “better.” The evidence is that each change is connected to a purpose.
Common failure: editing until the image looks fake
Over-editing is easy because every change feels small while you are making it.
Watch for:
- crushed shadows with no detail;
- blown highlights;
- extreme saturation;
- unnatural skin tones;
- excessive sharpening halos; and
- crops that remove important context.
Use before-and-after comparison. If you cannot explain why a change helps the intended use, consider undoing it.
Common failure: confusing resolution with quality
A larger pixel count does not automatically mean the image will look better on the website.
If the page only displays an image at 800 pixels wide, uploading a 6000-pixel file may simply make the page slower.
Good digital work balances visible quality with the needs of the system delivering it.
Evidence to keep
Save:
- original image;
- edited image;
- original dimensions and file size;
- final dimensions and file size;
- before/after comparison; and
- edit record explaining at least three intentional changes.
Success criteria
Your image-enhancement lab is successful when:
- the original remains available;
- the crop supports a stated purpose;
- the resized image fits the intended use;
- the correction is visible but defensible;
- the export opens correctly; and
- your written record explains what changed and why.
