Week 16: Operational Procedures and Professional IT Support

A technician can make the correct technical change and still create a support failure.

The repair can be undocumented. The wrong asset can be changed. The backup can be useless. The user can lose data. A maintenance window can be ignored. A remote session can expose private information. An AI-generated script can make the same mistake on forty computers before anyone notices.

Technical skill is only part of professional IT work.

The system question

What am I authorized to change, what could go wrong, how will I recover, and what evidence will prove the work was completed correctly?

How the chapter moves

  1. Documentation, Assets, and Change Management turns tickets, inventory, SOPs, SLAs, knowledge, and change records into operational memory rather than paperwork.

Another technician should be able to answer:

What was requested?
Which asset was affected?
What was authorized?
What changed?
What evidence existed before the change?
How could it be rolled back?
What proved success?
What remains unresolved?

If the answer is "I remember what I did," the system is depending on memory instead of operations.
