Week 01 · lesson
What Makes Esports Esports?
Two students compete at lunch. One wins. Is that esports? Maybe not. Put the same game into a school event with teams, schedule, rules, results, bracket, and an adult or student admin who can resolve a dispute. Now something changed: the system around the game.
Three useful categories
Casual gaming is primarily recreation: playing a story, building with friends, or playing a few matches for fun. Competitive gaming adds a goal to outperform an opponent or improve a ranking. Organized esports adds structure: teams or registered competitors, rules, a format, standings, and people who operate the event.
GAME + COMPETITION + STRUCTURE + RULES = ESPORTS
The boundary is not magic. Ask, “How is this game being played in this situation?” Five students playing together may be casual. The same five representing a school in a scheduled league match are participating in organized esports.
Worked classification
Eight schools play a scheduled tournament with a published rule set, assigned match times, a bracket, recorded results, and an official who can resolve disputes. This is organized esports: the game provides the competition, while the structure makes the result accountable. A player improving an online ranking is competitive gaming, but it is not necessarily organized esports because the school-event structure is absent.
Technology changed the scale
Competitive gaming existed before streaming: local contests, arcade score competitions, and console events all created ways to compare performance. Broadband networks made distant competition possible; livestreaming made it possible for distant audiences to watch. The important story is not memorizing dates. It is seeing how technology changes who can compete, organize, and watch.
Try it
Classify each case and defend your choice with evidence: a student building a Minecraft city; two students racing at lunch; a player improving an online ranking; eight schools in a scheduled tournament with published rules; a school team preparing for a statewide league.
