Week 09 · lesson

Privacy and Reputation Cases

Privacy is not only one secret.

It is often a combination problem.

Small pieces can form a larger identifiable picture.

Data mosaic

Seemingly minor data points can combine into:

  • identity clues
  • routine exposure
  • location inference
  • relationship mapping

Teach judgment, not paranoia.

Information buckets

Use three broad categories:

  • public-ready
  • share carefully
  • private or sensitive

Category alone is not enough. Context, audience, and purpose still decide.

Reputation lenses

Same content can read differently across audiences:

  • friends
  • teammates
  • coaches
  • competitors
  • general public

Reputation is about interpreted behavior over time, not perfection.

Team accounts and stewardship

Organizational accounts carry shared identity.

Posting authority and access control matter.

Stewardship basics:

  • limited authorized access
  • unique credentials
  • MFA when possible
  • offboarding access changes
  • clear posting ownership

Case investigation protocol

For each fictional case answer:

What information exists?
Who can see it?
What can be combined?
Who else is affected?
What should change?

Include cases such as profile fields, event posts, screenshot reuse, streaming background exposure, and shared-login account risk.

Information exposure surface

Map where information can leave:

Profile
Chat
Stream
Camera
Microphone
Screen share
Team site
Social posts
Shared documents

Privacy is not only what you type.

It is what the full system exposes.

If content identifies or records others, consent and policy context matter.

Set recording and posting expectations before conflict happens.

Build a team sharing rule set

For each item, choose public by default, ask first, team-only, do not share, or depends:

  • team photo
  • voice clip
  • match result
  • private message
  • player username
  • tournament schedule

If depends, state conditions.

Exit ticket

  1. Privacy becomes harder to manage when...
  2. Reputation is affected not only by what someone posts, but also by...
