Week 02 Reflection

You spent this week looking at something easy to underestimate.

Culture.

Not the posters. Not team colors. Not "we are a family."

Actual culture: how people communicate, what happens after mistakes, how disagreement works, how you treat opponents, what you allow, what you stop, and what happens when somebody crosses the line.

Your challenge

Choose one norm from your group's Esports Community Charter.

Not the easiest one. Choose the one you believe would have the biggest effect on an actual team.

Then defend it.

Part 1: State the norm

Write the exact norm.

Example:

Critique the decision, not the person.

Part 2: Put it under pressure

Create or use a realistic esports situation where the norm matters.

Not:

Someone was mean.

Give me the situation.

Example:

The team loses two rounds because the same player pushes before everyone else is ready. Another teammate becomes frustrated and starts insulting them.

Now we have something to analyze.

Part 3: Show the fork

What happens if the team follows the norm?

Then: what happens if the team ignores it?

You can model it like:

MISTAKE

Path A

USEFUL FEEDBACK

ADJUSTMENT

TEAM RESETS

Path B

PERSONAL ATTACK

DEFENSIVENESS

ARGUMENT

COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN

Same original mistake. Completely different outcome.

Reflection prompt

Write 150 to 200 words answering:

Which norm from your Esports Community Charter would have the biggest effect on team culture, and why?

Your response must include the norm, one realistic esports situation, what happens if people follow it, what happens if people ignore it, and why you personally believe the norm matters.

Do not give me this

Respect is important because everyone deserves respect.

True. Also incredibly generic.

Go deeper. Give me what happened, what changed, who was affected, and what the norm actually does.

Alternative submission

With instructor approval, you may submit a 60 to 90 second recorded response instead.

The evidence requirements are the same.

Final check

Before submitting, check:

  • Did I name a specific norm?
  • Did I give a realistic situation?
  • Did I show two possible outcomes?
  • Did I explain the effect on the team?
  • Does this sound like my actual thinking?

Good. Submit your reflection and your group's completed charter.

Week 02 complete

Last week:

Esports is bigger than the game.

This week:

A team is bigger than its players.

And now we have another question waiting for us.

If teamwork and culture matter this much, how do teams actually practice and perform under pressure?
