Career Path Investigation

Today you choose one career and investigate it properly.

One rule before you start. You are not allowed to submit this:

I want to be a caster because I like esports.

That is a preference, not an investigation. We are going deeper than a sentence.

Your investigation question

What does someone in this career actually do, what skills does the work require, and what could a high school student do now to start building those skills?

We are not asking how to guarantee a job. Nobody can answer that. We are mapping what the work is and what routes exist toward it.

Step 1: choose a career

Start from one of the three paths you built in Lesson 2. Choose the one you understand least, not the one you already like most. You will learn more.

Step 2: find out what the person actually does

Career titles hide enormous differences. "Producer" could mean broadcast production, event production, video production, or content production, and those are four different days at work.

Find at least four real responsibilities. Do not paste a paragraph from a job posting. Translate each responsibility into why it matters:

Responsibility:
Monitor the bracket and confirm reported match results.

Why it matters:
The next round cannot be scheduled correctly until results are verified,
and every team's standing depends on that record being right.

If you cannot explain why a responsibility matters, you have not understood it yet.

Step 3: build the skill stack

Identify at least two technical skills and three professional skills, using the split from Lesson 2.

Example: IT support

Technical:

hardware troubleshooting
network fundamentals

Professional:

communication with non-technical people
documentation
systematic problem solving

Each skill needs a reason tied to a responsibility from Step 2. A skill list with no connection to the work is a guess.

Step 4: what would a student do first?

Career research stops being abstract here.

The first step is never "get hired." It is a small piece of the real work, at a scale you can reach this year:

take a relevant class
join the production crew
help run one tournament
learn the broadcast software
design one event graphic
edit one highlight reel
build one webpage
help troubleshoot the lab machines
break down one replay
volunteer at a local event

These are not hobbies. They are evidence that you have tested the work.

Picture two students who both say they are interested in esports broadcasting. One has watched a lot of esports. The other has run three practice broadcasts, learned the software, made their own graphics, recorded commentary, and cut a short reel.

The second student is not more talented. They just have evidence, and they know something the first student does not: whether they actually enjoy it.

Step 5: education and training routes

The district curriculum requires you to investigate continuing education and the requirements attached to a career. Routes can include college, certificate programs, technical training, apprenticeships, structured learning experiences, internships, on-the-job experience, and self-directed projects.

Different careers expect different things, so find at least two possible routes and do not claim one is mandatory unless your source says so.

One assumption to drop immediately: an esports career does not require an esports degree.

If you are interested in graphic design, the useful study is graphic design. If you are interested in network support, the useful study is information technology, networking, computer science, or cybersecurity depending on the role. The skill comes first. Esports is the setting where you apply it.

The New Jersey connection

Rowan University is a useful example because its program makes these intersections visible. It connects esports to sport communication, media, public relations, marketing, graphic design, business analytics, management, and computing. Inside one university, esports touches many different academic paths.

Rowan also documents student opportunities in teams and gaming clubs, production, event planning, streaming, casting, and internships, including support for Garden State Esports competitions.

That combination matters: education and experience can happen at the same time. You learn something in a class, then use it during a live event where a failure has consequences. That is a much faster way to learn than either one alone.

College esports is not only competition

The K20 Center's openly licensed Esports in College lesson asks students to investigate how esports fits into the college experience and to compare what different programs offer.

For now, the point is narrow: a college esports program can include competition, clubs, production, coursework, campus employment, and work experience. Being on the competitive roster is one option among several.

Cost, scholarships, credentials, and entrance requirements are the second half of this unit. We handle those in the weeks ahead, with real numbers.

Step 6: transfer it

This section is required, and it may be the most important part of the whole assignment.

Answer this directly: if esports disappeared tomorrow, where would these skills go?

Every connection has to name the shared skill. "Both use computers" is not a connection.

Build this in slides. Nine sections.

Map how the work actually flows. One common shape:

Not every career fits that pattern. Adapt it to yours and say why you changed it.

5. Start building now

Three specific things a high school student could do this year.

6. Education and training

At least two possible routes, with what each one provides.

7. New Jersey connection

One relevant program, organization, school opportunity, internship possibility, or professional group. Rowan and Garden State Esports are valid starting points, but find your own if you can.

8. Transferable career map

At least three related careers outside esports, each connection labeled with the shared skill.

9. My next experiment

Complete: "If I wanted to test whether I actually enjoy this work, I could __________."

Keep it small and testable. Cast one practice match. Design one event graphic. Build one bracket. Edit one clip. Analyze one replay. Fix one lab machine.

Research quality

Use at least three sources, and try to cover three different kinds:

one career or industry source
one education or training source
one real organization or program

Three versions of "Top 10 Coolest Esports Jobs" is one source repeated three times.

For each source, run the check:

  • Who published this, and are they actually connected to the field?
  • Are they describing real responsibilities, or listing job titles?
  • When was it last updated?
  • Are they selling something?

A source that is selling something can still be useful. A college page is going to present its program favorably; that does not make its course list wrong. Just know what you are reading and where the incentive sits.

Do not invent salary numbers

Pay varies enormously by location, experience, employer, industry, and contract type. If you include a salary figure, cite exactly where it came from and what population it describes.

Do not write that a caster makes a specific amount because one website said so. That is the same overclaiming we have rejected all year, and it is worse here because someone might plan around it.

One honest note about career paths

There is rarely a clean path like this:

high school -> esports degree -> esports job

Real paths look closer to this:

interest
  -> small project
  -> a skill
  -> a class
  -> a club
  -> a bigger project
  -> college, training, or work
  -> an opportunity
  -> change of direction
  -> more learning

Messier, and much more accurate. The messiness is also why transferable skills matter so much: every step keeps more than one door open.
