Search, Sources, and AI Need Verification

Search engines and AI tools can help you locate, summarize, brainstorm, or rephrase information. They do not remove the need to verify factual claims.

A search result is a route toward evidence. An AI response is generated output. Neither automatically becomes a trustworthy source just because it sounds confident.

Search with a question you can inspect

Weak query:

technology good school

Stronger query:

site:edu student data privacy Google Forms school survey guidance

The second query is not guaranteed to find the truth. It defines the information need more clearly and can narrow the source environment.

Use lateral verification

When a source matters, do not stay trapped on one page asking whether it “looks official.”

Check:

• who created it;
• what organization is responsible;
• when it was updated;
• whether primary/official documentation exists;
• whether independent reliable sources agree on the important claim;
• whether the source actually supports the exact sentence you want to write.

Worked AI example

Suppose an AI assistant says:

Google Forms automatically makes every survey anonymous.

Do not paste that into the capstone.

The statement is too broad because identity behavior depends on settings and organization configuration. The correct next move is to inspect the current Form settings and relevant official documentation for the environment.

Your evidence might support a narrower claim:

This practice Form is configured not to ask for names, and the current settings do not intentionally collect an email field in the response table. The school environment may still apply organization-level controls outside this classroom check.

That statement identifies what you actually inspected.

Run a Claim Verification Record

Choose three factual claims relevant to the capstone. At least one may begin as an AI-generated or search-result idea.

A useful verification source could be official product documentation, school policy, a primary source, or a reliable independent source appropriate to the claim.

Failure mode: citation laundering

Adding a link after a sentence does not prove the linked page supports that sentence. Open the source and check the relevant evidence.

Information-literacy rule for the capstone

If an AI tool helped write, brainstorm, or summarize something, you still own the verification problem.

Keep the Claim Verification Record. During the final defense, you may be asked to show how one claim changed after verification.
