Brackets Are Fairness Tools
A bracket is not decorative event artwork. It decides how much one loss costs, how long the event takes, and what kind of evidence the organizer gets about the teams. No format is universally best. That is why organizers must explain the tradeoff before registration.
Receive: Four Useful Formats
| Format | Strength | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | Fast; easy to schedule | One loss ends the event |
| Double elimination | Gives a strong team one recovery path | More matches and more time |
| Round robin | Every team plays every other team | Grows quickly as teams are added |
| Swiss | Several rounds without immediate elimination | Needs clear pairing and tiebreak rules |
Seeding is the method used to place teams. Tiebreakers decide equal records. These are not trivia terms. Hidden seeding or mystery tiebreakers damage trust even if the organizer had a reason.
Process: Make the Constraint Visible
Eight teams have one class period. A group says, “Round robin is fairest.” Maybe. Count the matches before you agree. Each team would need seven opponents. The format cannot fit the available time without shorter games or multiple days. Fairness includes an honest schedule.
Practice: Compare Two Plans
Plan A: eight teams, single elimination, one afternoon. Plan B: four teams, round robin, one afternoon. Write one advantage and one limitation for each. Do not write “Plan A is bad.” State what it trades away.
Apply: Choose and Defend
Choose a format for a six-team classroom strategy event with 45 minutes. State the format, time assumption, seeding method, and one tiebreaker. You may choose a small round robin, Swiss-style rounds, or elimination. Your job is not to sound official. Your job is to make the choice inspectable.
Correct: Run the Schedule Check
Another group checks your math and asks, “Can every promised match actually occur?” Revise your plan if the schedule and bracket disagree.
Prove: Exit Evidence
Submit a format rationale with one sentence beginning: I rejected ___ because ___.
