Lesson 4: Mobile Device Support Lab

Core path: 42 minutes

Today you support a portable system as a collection of hardware, radios, accessories, policy, and application paths.

No personal device needs to be disassembled, enrolled in MDM, or modified.

Station A: hardware replacement decision

Supplied model data shows:

  • removable battery;
  • two SO-DIMM slots;
  • M.2 SSD;
  • removable wireless card with antenna leads;
  • integrated webcam/microphone module.

Build a service plan for one component. Include model documentation, compatibility, safe access, replacement, and verification.

Station B: accessory and connector compatibility

A dock provides USB, Ethernet, charging, and display outputs. The laptop's USB-C port supports data and charging but not video.

Explain why keyboard/Ethernet can work while the monitor does not.

Then identify where microUSB, miniUSB, Lightning, NFC, Bluetooth, stylus, headset, speakers, webcam, trackpad/drawing pad, and track point fit into the mobile accessory map.

Station C: cellular and hotspot support

Evidence:

  • phone supports 5G;
  • SIM/eSIM profile is present;
  • cellular data is disabled;
  • laptop connects to the phone's hotspot SSID;
  • laptop has no internet access.

Identify the healthy link and the failed upstream boundary.

Station D: MDM / BYOD

Evidence:

  • user owns the phone personally;
  • organization allows BYOD under policy;
  • corporate app requires an approved management/profile state;
  • device is not enrolled/configured under that policy.

Explain why reinstalling the app does not solve the management requirement.

Station E: synchronization

Evidence:

  • network works;
  • account authentication succeeds;
  • mail synchronizes;
  • contacts synchronize;
  • calendar does not;
  • calendar sync is disabled in the supplied settings;
  • device is near its data cap.

Separate app/account configuration from network and data-plan concerns.

Success criteria

A strong Week 5 lab record covers hardware replacement, accessories/connectivity, cellular/Bluetooth/location/MDM/sync, and troubleshooting without treating the entire mobile device as one black box.

Read it. Prove it.

Lesson knowledge checks

Answer from the lesson you just completed. Results stay in this browser and are not submitted.
Knowledge check 1

A phone has working Wi-Fi but one application will not sync. What should be checked before resetting the device?

Knowledge check 2

Why should a technician preserve data before a mobile repair that could erase the device?
