Lesson 2: macOS Features and Tools

macOS support is easier when you stop translating every task into Windows terms.

The technician questions are familiar, but the tools, paths, account model, and recovery features are different.

Installing and removing applications

Recognize common macOS application/package forms:

• .dmg — disk image commonly used to distribute software;
• .pkg — installer package;
• .app — application bundle;
• App Store — managed Apple application source.

Application removal depends on the application. Some .app bundles can be moved to Trash, while other software includes uninstallers or additional support components. Follow vendor documentation rather than deleting random library files.

System folders

Recognize these paths:

/Applications
/Users
/Library
/System
/Users/Library

/Library and a user's ~/Library serve different scopes. Do not delete files from either because the names look temporary.

Apple ID and corporate restrictions

Apple ID services can connect applications, synchronization, iCloud, messaging, and purchases. Managed organizations may restrict Apple ID use, software installation, privacy settings, or services through device-management policy.

The user owning the laptop does not automatically mean every setting is locally authoritative in a managed environment.

Best practices

At A+ depth, recognize the role of:

• backups;
• antivirus/endpoint protection where required by policy;
• operating-system and application updates/patches;
• Rapid Security Response (RSR) at recognition depth on supported Apple platforms/releases.

Vendor implementation can change, so verify current Apple support documentation for release-specific update behavior.

System Settings

Know where these functions conceptually live:

• Displays;
• Network;
• Printers;
• Scanners;
• Privacy;
• Accessibility;
• Time Machine.

Common macOS features

Multiple desktops and Mission Control

Help organize windows/workspaces and inspect open application spaces.

Keychain

Stores credentials, certificates, keys, and secure items used by macOS/applications.

Spotlight

System search/indexing feature.

iCloud

Can support services such as:

• iMessage;
• FaceTime;
• iCloud Drive.

Synchronization is not automatically an independent backup.

Gestures

Trackpad/mouse gestures can control navigation and workspace behavior.

Finder

Primary file-management interface.

Dock

Application/document launcher and running-app interface.

Continuity

Apple feature family that allows supported Apple devices/services to work together across nearby devices/accounts.

Technician tools

Disk Utility

Inspect/manage disks, containers/volumes, formatting, mounting, and supported disk operations.

FileVault

Full-disk encryption for macOS. Recovery/key management matters before enabling or changing encryption state.

Terminal

Command-line interface for shell/system tools. Commands can be powerful and destructive, so use a defined procedure.

Force Quit

Used when an application becomes unresponsive and normal close behavior fails.

Guided cases

App will not install

Evidence:

• .pkg comes from an approved vendor;
• current user lacks required authorization;
• device is organization-managed.

Do not bypass corporate restrictions. Determine whether the install requires approved administrator/MDM deployment.

External drive detected but unavailable

Disk Utility sees the device, but Finder does not show a mounted usable volume.

Stay at the disk/volume/filesystem boundary before replacing the cable if hardware detection is already proven.

Password works on website but not in one macOS app

Investigate account/app configuration and Keychain state before assuming the user forgot the password.
