Lesson 5: Printer Troubleshooting Challenge

Core 1 objective 5.6 is a symptom objective. A good technician connects the symptom to the print path, queue, configuration, network, finishing system, or maintenance stage before replacing hardware.
Required symptom set
Use the supplied cases to cover these symptoms explicitly:
- lines down printed pages;
- garbled print;
- paper jams;
- faded prints;
- paper not feeding;
- multipage misfeed;
- multiple prints pending in queue;
- speckling;
- double/echo images;
- grinding noise;
- finishing issues such as staple jams or hole-punch faults;
- incorrect page orientation;
- tray not recognized;
- connectivity issues;
- frozen print queue.
Ticket A: lines and speckling
Evidence:
- pages complete normally;
- repeated lines/speckles appear in a consistent pattern;
- network/queue behavior is normal.
Stay in imaging/consumable/maintenance scope before touching network settings.
Ticket B: garbled print
Evidence:
- printer's internal test page is correct;
- one workstation produces unreadable characters;
- another workstation prints correctly;
- affected host has an incorrect/incompatible driver/page-description configuration.
The print engine is not the first failure.
Ticket C: feed failures
Compare:
- paper not feeding at all;
- multipage misfeed;
- jam at a known paper-path stage;
- tray not recognized.
Those can involve pickup/feed rollers, media loading, tray sensors/configuration, duplex/finisher path, or mechanical obstruction. They are not one generic "paper jam."
Ticket D: faded or double/echo output
Use print-path evidence to distinguish toner/ink supply, drum/imaging, transfer/fusing, calibration, or technology-specific maintenance issues.
Ticket E: grinding noise
Stop and inspect according to the approved service procedure. Grinding is mechanical evidence. Do not keep printing repeatedly to "see if it clears itself."
Ticket F: queue problems
Evidence set 1:
- many jobs remain pending;
- printer is reachable;
- queue service/client state is stalled.
Evidence set 2:
- queue is frozen only on one workstation;
- other users print successfully.
Separate printer/network reachability from client/print-server queue state.
Ticket G: finishing fault
The printer creates correct pages, but the finisher reports a staple jam or fails a configured hole-punch operation.
The image/print engine can be healthy while the finishing subsystem fails.
Ticket H: wrong orientation
Printer produces correct content rotated incorrectly. Verify application/driver/printer orientation settings before replacing physical components.

A printer can be mechanically healthy and still fail as a networked service. It can also be perfectly reachable while the paper, imaging, or finishing path is broken. The technician's job is to prove which one.
